Navigating Life’s Winter Seasons: How to Tend to Yourself When Chaos Strikes
A personal reflection on resilience, leadership, and applying the 5 Pillars framework when life completely flips.
Last week, I declared to myself and my community at Maintaining Melinda that I was done waiting for the “perfect” time to pursue my dreams. I was ready to flip the narrative, shed my limiting beliefs, and step fully into my role as an entrepreneur. I was going to grow my business, The Bloom by Maintaining Melinda, hosting The Greenhouse Podcast, and preparing my keynote presentation, Who’s Tending You.
And then, less than 48 hours later, life threw an unexpected curveball.

My husband suffered a sudden medical emergency. A stroke caused by dangerously elevated blood pressure. After days in the ER, medical tests, and hospital care, we returned home with a new diet, strict recovery instructions, and a full schedule of follow-up appointments.
While I am profoundly grateful that he is recovering well, my daily reality instantly transformed. Suddenly, alongside my full-time remote corporate job and my growing business, I became a full-time caregiver.
In moments like these, old habits try to take over. It would have been easy to spiral, cancel the podcast, hide from social media, and tell myself that wanting more was a mistake. But instead, I chose to lean directly into the Five Pillars of the Bloom. The actual framework my business is designed around.
Here is how you can use the 5 Pillars to navigate your own unexpected “Winter Seasons”.
The 5 Pillars in Action
1. Seasonality: Respect Your Current Season
In personal growth and leadership, we cannot always be in full bloom. A Winter Season requires you to conserve energy, retreat from non-essential demands, and focus on healing and preservation. Recognizing that you are in a winter season prevents burnout and self-judgment.
2. Pruning: Ruthlessly Cut the Non-Essential
When capacity is limited, you must prune away what does not serve you or your immediate priorities. Drop any unnecessary distractions, step back from low impact, low value obligations, and clear space for what truly matters right now. And let go of the lingering guilt and fears, too.
3. Cultivation: Nurture What Must Grow
Cultivation is about intentional focus. Select the vital areas of your life that need your active care. These are the things you want to continue and carry with you into the future. Including family health, essential work, and personal wellbeing—and direct your remaining energy there.
4. Nourishment: Protect Your Mind, Body, and Spirit
As caregivers, leaders, and high-achievers, we often neglect ourselves first. But you cannot pour from an empty cup. Nourishing yourself means eating complete meals, filling your mind with positive inputs, and creating small moments of mental rest throughout the day. Moving your body so it stays strong and healthy.
5. Roots: Tap Into Your Support System
Lean into your roots. These are your core values, foundational habits, and community. Allow friends, family, and loved ones to step in and share the load with meals, chores, and emotional support.
